MCEEAC fall 2008 Teacher Workshops

Sanctuary Friends Foundation of the Florida Keys partnered with the National Key Deer Refuge to sponsor the Monroe County Environmental Education Advisory Council annual teacher workshop. The annual workshop is held at various locations throughout the Florida Keys each year. The purpose of the workshop is primarily to provide new teachers with an experiential tour of various habitats and the wildlife found here in the Florida Keys. Each teacher was also given a copy of the Florida Keys Environmental Story.
This year, the workshop was hosted by Keys Marine Lab on Grassy Key. The Lab provided a boat trip to near shore waters so the teachers could explore seagrass beds. An alternative for the non-snorklers was a visit to the Dolphin Research Center where teachers learned about dolphins and their life cycles. Also, Long Key State Park provided a guided walk of the beach berm habitat and a kayak trip of the mangrove forest.
These workshops aid new teachers in the county in developing a better understanding of the natural resources of the Florida Keys which will aid them in teaching the students of the Florida Keys.
