28th Annual Underwater Music Festival (10:00 AM - 2:00 PM)
LOOE KEY, Florida Keys — The marine life that inhabits the Florida Keys' living coral reef is widely acclaimed for its diversity, but it usually doesn't include an underwater orchestra or costumed mermaids. Except, that is, during the Lower Keys Underwater Music Festival. The unique event, which draws several hundred divers and snorkelers to enjoy the sound of music in the Keys' ocean realm, is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 14. The underwater concert takes place at Looe Key Reef, an area of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary approximately six miles south of Big Pine Key. Staged by Keys radio station US 1 Radio 104.1 FM, the submerged songfest typically features ocean- and water-themed selections ranging from the Beatles' "Yellow Submarine" to humpback whale songs and "water music" created by local musicians. The music is piped underwater via Lubell Laboratory speakers suspended beneath boats positioned above the reef. Organizers say the sound quality is extremely clear, with an ethereal effect caused by the sound waves' transmission through water. Adding to the ethereal quality are the bizarre reef denizens that can be sighted during the event. Past festivals have featured "The Snorkeling Elvises," a longhaired mermaid with a harp, an offbeat "Alice in Waterland" tea party and an underwater band complete with tuba. Besides its quirky popular appeal, the Underwater Music Festival carries a serious message of reef preservation. The broadcast incorporates diver awareness announcements emphasizing ways to enjoy the reef while minimizing impacts on the underwater environment. Divers and snorkelers interested in participating can reserve space on boats run by Lower Keys dive operators or launch their own boats from public ramps and marinas in the area. Marathon Lionfish Tournament (All Day)
Sanctuary Friends decided to take on the challenge of hosting a two-day lionfish tournament July 21-22, 2012, the weekend before the lobster mini-season. Hoping to utilize some out-of-town guests as well as local divers who are intent on scouting out their spots before catching lobster, we hope to bring on about 20 teams.

Registration can take place at any of the participating dive shops found on the flyer, and if you register by July 1, 2012, the fee for a four-person team is $80 instead of $100. Participating dive shops include: A Deep Blue Dive, Captain Hooks, Tilden’s Scuba Center, Big Time Bait and Tackle, Dive Duck Key, and Hall’s Diving Center.

Cressi has donated four spearguns, posters, dive gloves and shirts, Coconut Cay donated two two-night stays at their resort, and Little Palm donated four Sunday Brunches. Divers Direct sponsored a $250 gift card and West Marine donated a cooler and bags for the teams. Captain Hooks also donated two free dive trips on their boat. There will also be cash prizes! Winners will include most, biggest and smallest lionfish, as well as runners up.

The captain and team meeting will be held Friday night at Captain Hooks. And following the conclusion of the event on Sunday, a lionfish tasting and award banquet will be held at Sparky’s landing.
